ERC20 and TRC20 are both token standards used on their respective blockchains. ERC20 is the token standard for the Ethereum network, while TRC20 is the token standard for the Tron network. Both are used extensively for USDT (Tether) transfers, but they have significant differences.
Network Infrastructure
ERC20 tokens operate on the Ethereum blockchain, which uses Proof of Stake and is known for its robust developer ecosystem and dApp compatibility. TRC20 tokens operate on the Tron Virtual Machine (TVM), which was designed for high-throughput, low-cost transactions.
Transaction Fees
This is the most important difference for everyday users:
- ERC20 (Ethereum): Gas fees range from $3 to $50 or more during network congestion.
- TRC20 (Tron): Fees are typically under $1 per transaction, often just a few cents.
Transaction Speed
Tron processes approximately 1,500 transactions per second and confirms transactions in about 3 seconds. Ethereum processes around 15–30 TPS, and during congestion, confirmations can take 15 minutes or longer.
Compatibility
ERC20 is compatible with MetaMask and the entire Ethereum DeFi ecosystem, including Uniswap, Aave, and Compound. TRC20 is supported by most major centralized exchanges (Binance, Huobi, OKX) and wallets (Trust Wallet, TronLink).
For frequent small transfers and payments, TRC20 is the better choice due to lower fees. For DeFi interactions on Ethereum, ERC20 is required.
Exchange Rate
The USDT ERC20 to USDT TRC20 exchange rate is always 1:1. Both are issued by Tether Limited and pegged to the US dollar. The only cost is the conversion or bridging fee.
